From 5 to 6, you get that small tweed working up a sweat tone with a dash of Vox sparkle for good measure. Stays pretty clean with single coils up to about 4. I will spend more time with the 3 watt setting in the coming week. the following is regarding the 5 watt setting only. A little buzz, but I play a stock '99 American Tele - a little 60 cycle hum, anyone? Tolex, piping, grill cloth, control knobs/switches/jacks all seem of high quality. And, I'm a combo guy - this is still great to grab in one hand, my guitar in the other, and I'm on my way. But, that gives me a sense of confidence.
I've had the weekend to spend some time with this amp, and here is my initial report: Well, the Blackheart Little Giant combo arrived from Music 123 on Friday. I took mine off, but put it back on since it seemed a bit naked without it. Also, for those of your that do not like the Blackheart logo, it is easily removable with 2 screws.
I'll try to get some pics up Monday night. This thing is built like a tank, and weighs around 35-37 lbs, and is larger than I expected. I also noticed that the Blackheart seemed really quiet, and was actually quieter than the SS amp I had been using. I was actually pleased at the amount of clean headroom, which may come in handy if I ever get good enough to play out. This amp is plenty loud for my home playing, and I was a bit disappointed that I could not get a good "crunch" at the lower volumes with my stock MIM Tele - but, that's what pedals are for.
This brightness impression was confirmed when I e-mailed Bruce at Bitmo about his Triple Bypass mod to the tone controls, and is easily adjusted out with the 3-band. I found the amp to be a little on the bright side, but still able to get some nice bass response out of the 12" speaker. This is my first tube amp, and I have just started playing again in the last few months after a hiatus of several years, so please take my observations with a grain of salt, as my ears are still getting acclimated to the nuances of different set-ups. The only thing I found wrong was that the input jack didn't hold my cord quite as snug as I would like but since the jack is vertical on the combo, it's not much of an issue (plus, I can squeeze the contact a bit tighter when I get inside it). My initially impression is that the build and finish are very nice. The complaint in this action was not filed by Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check, LLP.My Blackheart did arrive, and I'm pretty impressed, especially getting it for $175 with the Music123 discount.
